Tessa Talks Books

The Last to See Her is a story that is like an onion – you have to peel off layer after layer before you get to the heart of the matter。 Peeling those layers will keep you enthralled as each new layer brings more suspense and more complexities to the point that it becomes hard to imagine what could be in the next layer down。 What I Liked I liked that the book pulled me in from page one。 I was utterly distracted when I picked it up, but it rapidly took me away from all that plagued my brain and completely enthralled me with its deceptively simple story that quickly turned more and more complex。 By the end, the story is a much different tale than the one you begin with。 I think out of all the characters, I liked Hawk the best。 He is the calm at the center of the storm。 As a policeman, he stayed professional and focused, turning over every stone he could find。 He did his best to resist being manipulated by all the people of interest, which was no small feat。 The story has a dual timeline that is easy to follow, even though it randomly skips back and forth。 These changes in the timeline enhance the growing complexities and keep the suspense at a high level。 I loved how past and present worked together to slowly reveal the story behind the story, as each layer is peeled away。 What I Wish It is always hard to provide information on the ending without giving away spoilers, so I’ll say that I wish the conclusion had a satisfying twist。 To Read or Not to Read If you like in-depth looks at the many many layers of a person, a marriage, and a family, this is a book that will enthrall and mystify in all the right ways。

I listened to the audiobook version of this and loved it! Full of twists and turns with a satisfying ending。 The story is told in varying points of view and timelines, but it never got confusing and I think it helped build the suspense。 I definitely recommend this one!

Secrets, secrets, secrets! I love reading books where you think that everything is normal, but it turns out that everyone has a secret and boy are they juicy secrets! The Last to See Her hooked me in right away。 The chapters alternated between the characters’ past and present and of course all of the secrets were revealed。 I was curious on what had happened to Gen and what had happened in her past to have her disappear in the present。I’m knocking the novel off a few stars because of the ending。 I Secrets, secrets, secrets! The “twist” just didn’t work for me, it felt cheap and as a whole, mental illness was portrayed in an unrealistic manner。I’ve also never read the word “mercurial” used as much as it was in this book; I could’ve made a drinking game。

I didn't see that coming throughout the book。My explanation as to why I didn't give it a full 5 stars was for 2 reasons。 Approximately a little over halfway through I did figure out who had kidnapped Gen。 Even so, I kept on reading because I felt that there had to be more to this story and I had to know the whys。 And it was then that many of the OMGs!!! started。 The other reason, which probably wouldn't bother another reader, but for me, I found annoying was the use of the word mercurial too many times。Even with that, I will be putting this "new to me" author on my "authors to read" list。 。。。more

The Last to See Her by Courtney Evan Tate is a standalone mystery thriller。 The story begins with Gen, a romance novelist, who is planning to move back to her home town, since she wants to get away from a bad divorce。 Her sister, Meg, who is a doctor, convinces her to meet in New York (she is at a convention) and celebrate her new freedom。 They enjoy each other’s company, having dinner and even to the point of both getting drunk, with Gen saying she needs to take a walk and get some air, and Meg The Last to See Her by Courtney Evan Tate is a standalone mystery thriller。 The story begins with Gen, a romance novelist, who is planning to move back to her home town, since she wants to get away from a bad divorce。 Her sister, Meg, who is a doctor, convinces her to meet in New York (she is at a convention) and celebrate her new freedom。 They enjoy each other’s company, having dinner and even to the point of both getting drunk, with Gen saying she needs to take a walk and get some air, and Meg telling her to be careful。 But Gen never comes back。 Meg is desperate to find her sister, and the police will do nothing, until a day or two passes。What follows are flashbacks through the POV’s of Gen, Meg and Thad (Gen’s husband), which is also in past and current formats。 The police intereview Meg and then Thad to try to discover what happened to Gen, which does make both of them suspects separately。 During these investigations, many secrets, lies and truths will be revealed, opening up a different light to Gen’s disappearance。In Gen’s past Pov, we learn how she discovered her sister betrayed her trust by sleeping with Thad。 Gen hires an investigator to spy on Thad, learning he was spending a lot of time with another women。 In Gen’s current time, we find out that she was attacked, and saved, but now being imprisoned by Thad’s mentally challenged sister。 According to the sister, Gen stands in the way to having her brother stay and take care of her。 She just needs to decide what to do with Gen。During Meg’s POV, she learns that Gen discovered her tryst with Thad, and feels guilty, even though she says it was a mistake that only happened once。 The cop investigating the case learns about an investigator hired by Gen, and they also find a journal, which is the start of a new novel, with the story line covering a cheating husband, bad sister, and her plot to kill them。 Did Gen plan her own disappearance? Was there any truth to the novel? The Last to See Her was very well written by Tate, which kept us glued to the page, as there were so many twists and surprises, especially when the truths are discovered。 I will say that I thought the constant changing of POV’s past and present could have been less, as at times it was a bit confusing。 I also do not want to give more information, as it would be major spoilers。 Overall, The Last to See Her was a great thriller。BarbThe Reading Cafe 。。。more

Meg becomes less and less likable with every page, as does Thad (the cheating ex) and pretty much everyone else。 Still, the story was not beyond saving。 It even had some nice turns that could have been fine without the ridiculous and the inane。Suddenly, Gen is a genius who is crazy。 Yeah。 Over and over people talk about how it is expected that she should be crazy because she is such a creative genius that she writes romance novels! I'm sure they are really good ones。 The treatment of mental illness and its portrayal here is pretty awful And completely unnecessary。 The story would have been better without it。 Overall, the book felt rushed。 There were constant inconsistencies in the not just the behavior of the characters, but in what they said and even what they looked like。 It was disappointing。 It could have been very strong。 。。。more

This book started off strong but became increasingly confusing and unrealistic as it went on。 It centers on Genevieve (Gen), who is reeling from finding out her husband Thad cheated on her, and takes a weekend trip with her sister Meghan to New York。 Lo and behold, Gen ends up disappearing without a trace her first night there, and a ton of secrets are uncovered in a narrative that flips back and forth between the past and the present。The writing itself was good, and I like the style of going ba This book started off strong but became increasingly confusing and unrealistic as it went on。 It centers on Genevieve (Gen), who is reeling from finding out her husband Thad cheated on her, and takes a weekend trip with her sister Meghan to New York。 Lo and behold, Gen ends up disappearing without a trace her first night there, and a ton of secrets are uncovered in a narrative that flips back and forth between the past and the present。The writing itself was good, and I like the style of going back and forth between past and present。 I felt engaged with the characters to begin with but got annoyed with them as time went on。 I liked both the private investigator and the detective, however, both of them did incompetent things that didn't seem indicative of their personalities。 My primary issue with the book is that most of these issues could have been solved if these characters just spoke to one another。 I grew increasingly frustrated with the lies and overreactions that stemmed from everyone keeping so many secrets, some of which I never even understood the reasoning behind not opening up。The book took a big turn as it raced toward the end that I felt turned Gen into a completely different character than we were led to believe。 While I always enjoy a story with a lot of twists, I didn't really get it and couldn't find evidence earlier in the story to back up this big reveal。 This, as well as many other parts of the book, required me to suspend my disbelief。 Overall, definitely a fast paced story but it just became less realistic and less cohesive as the book went on。 I am glad I read it and it held my interest, but there are just too many remaining questions and inconsistencies to give it more than 3 stars。 Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Thank you to the publisher, Mira, for providing me with an ARC of The Last to See Her in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。The GistI have to confess I don’t know how to write this review。 How do I start and what should I write? What little anecdote should I include before getting to the details?I never had the pleasure of reading any of the author’s other works, so I didn’t know what to expect。The synopsis sounded intriguing and I sure could have used another distraction from the fact that once again the city was in a lockdown。I was neither preparing for a let down nor had ridiculously high hopes。 I could envision myself snuggles up on the couch with a cup of tea, really sinking my teeth into this suspense/thriller/mystery。 The Last to See Her began to make me rather annoyed and a little angry。 Let me explain why。The DetailsWhat jumped out at me right from the start was this undercurrent of arrogance that came across from the two main characters。 They exuded a degree of high mightiness。 It was clear that they thought themselves above the rest, because they were “successful”。 Although, in today’s world what can be classified as success clearly needs to be redefined。Anyway, I wasn’t too excited reading about two snooty female characters, who really did not know the meaning of true hardship。 And I didn’t appreciate that the reader was supposed sympathize with them。What really gave me that nervous eye twitch and had that big blue vein inside my head dangerously close to popping was the inconsistency of the characters。Don’t try to sell a reader on a character, who describes herself as “scientific”, “fact-based” and “no-nonsense” and then have her screech at everyone and faint。 Uh? Did I miss something? As a part-police procedural, this story really fell short。 Not to spoil too much, but why is the lead detective taking a person of interest out on a coffee date?Furthermore, usually I enjoy mystery stories that flip back and forth between the present and past, but I felt the formatting for The Last to See Her was a little confusing。The VerdictOverall, I thought The Last to See Her was a little unpolished。 It could have benefited from a few more editorial touches。None of the characters were the least bit likeable。 It had potential, but it never had a chance to materialize。This wasn’t for me。ElliotScribbles 。。。more

SO MANY MIXED FEELINGS。 In a way, I'm in awe at how many balls were juggled here without dropping one。 And yet, I'm also bamboozled with a love/hate feeling about this one。 I have a feeling this is going to be quite a divisive read amongst readers and I'm ALWAYS here for that! So when it comes down to it, I have to split the difference with this one because I honestly don't know which way to turn。 Does this make me a method reviewer? 😉 (It only makes sense if you know, but even if you do, it pro SO MANY MIXED FEELINGS。 In a way, I'm in awe at how many balls were juggled here without dropping one。 And yet, I'm also bamboozled with a love/hate feeling about this one。 I have a feeling this is going to be quite a divisive read amongst readers and I'm ALWAYS here for that! So when it comes down to it, I have to split the difference with this one because I honestly don't know which way to turn。 Does this make me a method reviewer? 😉 (It only makes sense if you know, but even if you do, it probably still doesn't。。。。)I literally had to press my hands to my forehead at the 65% mark because really? REALLY? C'mon。。。。。 I understand marriages falling apart。 I understand infidelity。 I understand insecurity。 I even understand hiding a past that's really not necessary but why not for the sake of drama and hey, we're all human so we all have our *things* other people may not understand that。 But couple allllll of that with ***** being able to do ******。 Um。。。 This one just got too convoluted at the end。 I was so into this for it to take that many left turns at Albuquerque。 I will say that I didn't *quite* expect one part。。。 mainly because it doesn't seem feasible but I am a sucker for suspending reality。 This is fiction after all。 😉Despite having these issues, my eyes didn't get stuck in the back of my head from rolling them。。。。 instead, I found that this was written in a compelling way that even while I was shouting "C'MON", I still couldn't keep my eyes off the pages。 The pacing and succinct way the author brings this story to us is very addictive。 And helloooooo, DRAMA - I love it。 This is definitely heavy on the domestic and less so on any thrillery/suspense you may anticipate。 So grab your popcorn and adult beverage of choice and sit yourself done for some family "fun"。 😏 。。。more

I received a copy of The Last to See Her in exchange for a fair and honest review。 tCourtney Evan Tate (famous for Such Dark Things and I'll Be Watching You) is back with another thriller, The Last to See Her。 With a title like that, you just know things are going to go downhill for this newest cast of characters。tA sisters weekend away following a messy divorce sounds like the perfect way to cope。 That is what Gen was hoping, at least。 She recently left her husband, thanks to his cheating ways。 I received a copy of The Last to See Her in exchange for a fair and honest review。 tCourtney Evan Tate (famous for Such Dark Things and I'll Be Watching You) is back with another thriller, The Last to See Her。 With a title like that, you just know things are going to go downhill for this newest cast of characters。tA sisters weekend away following a messy divorce sounds like the perfect way to cope。 That is what Gen was hoping, at least。 She recently left her husband, thanks to his cheating ways。 Then she let her sister talk her into a trip to New York。tIt's the last trip these two sisters will be taking together。 The first night in the Big City, and Gen has utterly disappeared。 No evidence to her whereabouts, minus her jacket in an alley。 The situation isn't looking good, and it's the sister, Meg, who will have to deal with the fallout。t “His next words chilled her to the bone。t'You were the last to see her。'”tYikes! The Last to See Her is a creepy and thrilling read, that much is for certain。 The whole concept around missing persons can always get a little dark, and Courtney Evan Tate did a brilliant job of wringing out every moment of tension。 tI'll confess that part of me was almost afraid to start reading The Last to See Her。 After all, it literally begins with a disappearance。 That's never good。 Yet I'm so glad that I got over that fear and dug into this read。tWhen I say that this is a twisted thriller, I really mean it。 There are so many shocking revelations, many of which take a few moments to think through and fully process。 They weren't twists that I was expecting, that much I can promise you。tThe Last to See Her is a tense read, even from that very first chapter。 Again, I'm sure that has at least a little bit to do with the premise itself。 But it is impressive nonetheless, and is surely enough to keep most readers invested right through to the end。tI should mention that there were a couple of things that kept me from loving this book as much as I wanted to。 There's a depiction of mental health in here that I don't quite love。 Likewise, there's trauma and brain damage portrayed as well。 Again, I think these parts could have been strengthened。tThat being said, I adored a couple of the supporting characters, so it made it pretty difficult overall on how I wanted to rate this read。 I'm solidly stuck somewhere between a three and a four (and would give it a 3 ½ star rating, if given the option)。 tIn short; The Last to See Her is a quick and fascinating read, one with plenty of twists and turns, and is a perfect read for a cold winter night。 Check out more reviews from Quirky Cat's Fat Stacks 。。。more
